CHAP THREE

Coraline stepped quietly through the forest. It was a moonless night, only making it more difficult to see. She crunched through dry leaves and grass, attempting to be quiet. She searched through the bag at her side, and brought out a flashlight. She flicked it on. “Something black jumped at the sudden light. Coraline jumped as well. It flinched as Coraline shone the bright light in its face.
“Knock it off, Coraline!” It whispered.
“Wybie?” She turned the light off. “You scared me. Jerk!” Wybie was really quiet when he needed to be.
“Sorry, Chicken.”
Coraline managed to find him in the darkness. She punched his arm.
“Ow!” He hissed. “What was that for?! I’m helping you, here!”
Coraline patted his new bruise. “Gee, Sorry, Wybourne.”
“Ouch!”
“Shh!” Coraline grabbed his hand. “You know the forest better than I do. Lead me.”
They started sneaking through the dark forest, hand in hand, Wybie illuminating their steps. “So you snuck out alright?”
“Surprisingly,” There were actually no issues sneaking out. Her parents went to bed early and they left the key in the key drawer. “What about you?”
“No problems. Gramma didn’t expect me to sneak out so soon again.” Coraline could tell he was smirking in the darkness even if she couldn’t see it.
“I think we’re getting close, shine over there.”
Wybie shone his flashlight. “Um… OK. Be careful- -“
Coraline yelped and lurched forward suddenly, and Wybie pulled her back.
“…I…I think I found the well.” She whimpered.
“And you almost fell in it.”
Coraline let go of his hand. “Shine in here.” Wybie shined his light as she searched through her bag.
Coraline pulled out a bundle of rope.
Wybie knew immediately what she was planning to do. “J-Jonesy…”
She looked up at him. “I have to. Earlier today, something was following me.” She stood up and pointed at the well. “It fell down there.” Coraline continued. “And it fell through the cover, so it’s got to be big.” She tied the rope around a tree; Wybie’s light from his flashlight illuminating her actions. “Plus… I should check on the hand, see if it’s still down there.”
Wybie rubbed his temples. “Do you have any idea how dangerous this is?”
“Yeah, so I’m guessing, somewhere deep inside, you want to be in my position.”
Wybie shook his head. “N-no. No way. I’m terrified, and I’m just standing here.”
The plan was that Coraline would tie a rope to her waist and with the other end connected to a tree; Wybie would lower Coraline into the well. She’d touch the surface f the water, and if anything was actually in there, it would most likely attack her.  In that case, Wybie was to pull Coraline up to the surface quickly, and cover the well.
But if the rope broke… or Wybie couldn’t get Coraline up fast enough, he was to do the same. Minus the Coraline.
“Tell me if you can see the stars from there, Jonesy!” Wybie called as he carefully lowered Coraline. She flicked her flashlight on, shining it on the walls of the well. She shined it towards the water. “Too bad you aren’t the one down here.” She reached the bottom; her feet dangled a foot above the water. “It won’t reach!” She called up to Wybie. She was a bit thankful that it wouldn’t reach.
“That’s it!” He said. “It won’t go any further!”
Coraline studied the murky water. Something pale glowed dully underneath the water. Coraline struggled to look. A low hum interrupted her thoughts, musical, and oddly nostalgic.
“Wybie? Are you humming?”
“What? No!”
A flash of thunder made Coraline scream. Cold rain followed.
“What is it?!” Wybie called.
“It’s raining again.”
Wybie looked at the dark, moonless sky. “No, it isn’t, Coraline.” Wybie felt a sudden chill go down his spine. “C-can I pull you up yet?”
“No!” The rain that apparently didn’t exist poured onto Coraline, drenching her and landing softly onto the well surface, rippling imperfections. She struggled to cling onto the flashlight, but it slipped.
It splashed into the water, making an even bigger ripple on the surface. It sunk, lighting under-water for only a second, before dying into darkness. Coraline looked around herself blindly, in complete and total chilling darkness.
“Wybie! My light is out!”
“What?!”
“And I’m wet!” She complained. “Stupid rain!” Wybie looked up again. Still no rain.
The humming stopped, and the water below Coraline stirred, slapping the sides of the well. Coraline looked down. The water glowed lightly as something pale rose to the surface; and she pulled up her legs instinctively, hugging them while she hung.
The pale thing rose above the water, a rounded square covered with a mop of twisted fuzz. Coraline guessed it was a head. It looked up at her, and tilted its head, so half of its face was in the water. But the half she could actually see was pale, and had a glow about it. Coraline stared, her eyes wide. It stared back with round black eyes that were slanted on its head.
“What are you…?” Coraline asked, expecting it not to answer. It didn’t. It stretched out a bony white hand. Coraline stared but reluctantly grabbed the hand.
“Wybie!” She yelled urgently. “Pull me up!”
“When… did you get so heavy?!” Wybie groaned, tugging on the rope.
Finally, Coraline emerged. She clawed at the ground, one hand holding onto the helpless pale thing. Wybie grabbed her hand, but seeing the silhouette of the figure holding onto Coraline, he almost let go.
“Wybie!” She hissed. “Let go and I’ll kill you!” Wybie pulled her up and she fell onto the earth gratefully. She disconnected herself from the life-line around her waist. With Wybie’s help, she pushed a new cover over the well.
Coraline looked up. The rain had stopped, and it was lighter outside, a sort of graying dawn, pink at the edges. She shrugged, when she heard a strange noise from behind her. A sort of scared whimper, but a relieved sigh at the same time. She looked over to see the pale thing in dark clothing staring at her.
Now, in the open light where she could see everything more clearly, she could recognize the figure. “Oh…oh my god.”
Wybie’s green eyes were wide with fear and recognition.
:D Sorry It kinda took forever!
Tell me if I messed up on anything! :P
Ok, so if you think you know who the person that was in the well is DO NOT say. I don't want you to ruin it for the cluless peeps who can't add 2 and 2 together. XD Sorry if that was offensive.... XD Ok anyhow....
